What a wonderful way to end the year!

We just received this letter from The Midwest Book Review today with the following critique:

A deftly crafted novel and an absorbing read from beginning to end, “because” is a compelling and thoroughly entertaining novel that documents author Jack Langedijk’s truly exceptional storytelling skills. Very highly recommended for community library General Fiction collections, it should be noted for personal reading lists that “because” is also available in a Kindle edition ($6.99).

The Midwest Book Review (MBR) is an organization established in 1976 that committed to promoting literacy, library usage, and small press publishing. The MBR publishes a number of monthly book review magazines specifically designed for community and academic librarians, booksellers, and the general reading public.

We sent two paperbacks of because to MBR for a review in April and the book made it through the final cut (according to MBR, only about a third of all books submitted get reviewed) and the review was featured in the Small Press Bookwatch magazine November 2015 issue.

We are very grateful for the organization that supports and gives priority consideration to small press publishers and self-published authors like me. It is truly wonderful to end the year with such positive feedback. I hope you share my excitement and thank you too for all your support along the way. May 2016 bring you an abundance of energy and joy!

The RIM Confederacy: Pirates!

“Tanner Scott, a RIM Confederacy Naval officer, has fought many battles against both humans and aliens. Years ago, he proved victorious against a band of aliens. His ongoing fight with his own alcoholism however remains a stalemate.

And suddenly, Pirates have appeared on the RIM. They have kidnapped the passengers of many craft and sold them into slavery and Scott is ordered to find them and rescue them.

But the pirates aren’t acting alone. They are sponsored by a powerful Royal with ambitious plans, and she isn’t about to let some Navy captain stand in the way of her mining empire. Scott must rescue the slaves while simultaneously navigating the treacherous space of interstellar politics.

If he fails, a Royal will gain more power, the entire Confederacy may unravel, and Scott’s alcohol addiction will be the least of his worries…”

Scary Mary

The dead speak to her. She wishes they’d shut up.

Mary has always been different. She’d like to be normal, but being able to hear ghosts means she’ll never be like everyone else. She starts her junior year of high school hoping to be left alone, but Cyrus Asher is new and doesn’t know or seem to care that she’s an outcast. They start hanging out and all is well until she goes over to his house. Cy’s house is haunted, and not by Caspar, the friendly ghost.

But it’s not the ghost that ruins the evening. That honor belongs to Vicky “The Hickey” Nelson with her borrowed Ouija board and stuck-up friends. They make Mary so angry that she uses the ghost to freak out everybody, Cy included. He orders her out, and Mary thinks she’s lost whatever chance she had with him. But there’s still the ghost to deal with. He’s mean, nasty, and possibly homicidal. She has to get rid of him or Cy and his family could be hurt. Or worse.

The Christmas Homecoming

I lied. I do care about you. I’m not over you and I don’t know if I ever will be.

My name is Abigail, but most people call me Abby. When Jonathon broke up with me a year ago just after Christmas I thought I’d be fine. Now the holidays are here again, and I’m falling apart at the seams. I can’t get him off my mind no matter how hard I try.

Reconciliation isn’t an option. He has a new girlfriend, a more serious one like he wanted. They’re perfect for each other. He’s the son of a billionaire, a district attorney, and she’s a publicist. As a secretary in a lawyer’s office, I can’t compete with that. I know I need to move on with my life, but I don’t know how.

When I invited his parents over for tea on Christmas Day, l didn’t know I was igniting a course of events that would change our lives forever. Once the wheels were in motion everything spiraled so quickly. I didn’t even see it coming.

Will Abigail find it in her heart to move on with a new love? Or will she win Jonathon’s heart back in time for Christmas?
