Talking to a Financial Advisor (or Anyone Who Gives Professional Advice)
This is one of the most important conversations you will have and one where you might feel most intimidated. But you are the client. You are in charge.
The Right Approach
You are not there to impress them. You are there to get help.
The Right Questions
- “How do you get paid? Commission? Fee-based? Flat fee?”
- “Are you a fiduciary? Are you legally required to act in my best interest?”
- “What are your qualifications? How long have you been doing this?”
- “What is your investment philosophy? Active or passive? What is your track record?”
- “What are the fees? All of them? Including hidden fees?”
- “Can you explain that to me in plain English? I am not a financial expert.”
The Right Boundary
You do not have to say yes. You do not have to sign anything you do not understand. You can say:
“Thank you for this information. I would like to take some time to think about it and compare options. I will get back to you.”
The Golden Rule of Financial Advisors
If someone is pressuring you, walk away. If someone is using jargon to confuse you, walk away. If someone promises guaranteed returns, walk away. A good advisor will be patient, clear, and transparent.
The “I Don’t Know” Script
Sometimes you do not know how to have the conversation. Sometimes you do not know what to say. That is okay. Here is a script for those moments:
“I don’t know how to talk about this. I am feeling anxious, and I don’t want to say the wrong thing. Can we just be honest with each other and figure this out together?”
This is the most powerful sentence you can use. It acknowledges your vulnerability. It invites collaboration. And it opens the door to a real conversation.
